Stamp Out Hunger food drive, Saturday, May 13 right from your own mailbox!
On May 13, leave a bag of non-perishable food items by your mailbox and your postal carrier will pick it up and it will be delivered to the Bountiful Basket Food Shelf in Chaska. It’s as easy as that and you will have helped families in need right in your community. The “Most Current Needs” list for Bountiful Basket can be found here: https://bountifulbasketfoodshelf.org/donate-food/. Most in-demand items include: cereal, peanut butter and jelly, pasta, beans, canned chicken and tuna, canned fruit, canned corn and carrots, cooking oil and diapers size 3, 4, 5, and 6.
Bountiful Basket Food Shelf is partnering with the Chanhassen Postal Anex who service and pick up food in Chanhassen, Chaska, Victoria and Excelsior. All food collected will go to the Bountiful Basket Food Shelf. “With summer approaching, we are coming upon our busiest time of the year — when children are out of schools and children no longer have access to free and reduced meals at school which means more mouths to fill at home,” says Patti Sinykin, Bountiful Basket Executive Director. “Simultaneously, this is also the time of year when food drives are at their lowest. This drive is incredibly important to the community as it will help keep our shelves stocked throughout the summer months.”

The “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) (https://www.nalc.org/community-service/food-drive) and is the largest one day food drive in the nation. Every year, throughout the nation, the Stamp Out Hunger food drive is a unique opportunity to meet a common goal of helping to meet food insecurity in our community. This year is the 31st Stamp Out Hunger food drive from the NALC. “This is a labor of love for letter carriers, and we are proud to see how it has grown in impact over the years,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said. “It’s an honor to be able to help people in need all across the country—and to do so in a way that brings out the best in so many Americans.” In 2018, letter carriers collected 71.6 million pounds of food donations along their postal routes. That brought the total since NALC’s food drive began in 1993 to more than 1.67 billion pounds.
Nationally, 34M people and 9M children experience food insecurity and rely on food donations. In 2023, Bountiful Basket Food Shelf is now serving twice as many families this year as we did in 2022 and the need continues to increase as our communities grow.
